A

The music is played throughout the play with varying levels of intensity - used as a device to emphasise Blanche’s thoughts, memory of her ex-husband is with her at all times. Almost like her past is haunting her.

How is the Blue Piano used in the play?

A

Used as the ‘upbeat’ music for the play - present in the introduction, the reunion of Stella and Stanley in Scene 3. Creates the image of a paradise in the audience’s imagination.

Contrasts drastically with Scene 9, during Mitch’s and Blanche’s scene. A contrast between the normally happy scenes - showing a shift in the tone of the play.

A

A

Shows the theme of fantasy as Blanche DuBois lives in a world of fantasy. She thinks that she belongs to an elite class, does not want to face the reality of losing Belle Reve. Her illusion is ravished by Stanley, who catalyses her downfall which ends up with her in a mental instituation.
