The Definition of Solutions:
- Are made up of more than one substance.
- Solutions CANNOT be separated by
mechanical means such as sorting, filtering, settling, or spinning.
- This is commonly called a mechanical mixture.
The Definition of Heterogeneous Mixture or Mechanical Mixture:
A mixture with two or more visible components or phases. They CAN be separated by mechanical means such as sorting, filtering, settling, or spinning. This is commonly called a mechanical mixture.

Definition of Homogeneous Mixture:
A mixture will with one phase or visible component. It CANNOT be separated by mechanical means since the particle is in solution - dissolved and too small to separate this is commonly called a solution.
Definition of Dissolve:
Able to form solution.
Definition of Solute:
The substance that is dissolved.
There is usually less of this substance.
Definition of Solvent:
The substance that does the dissolving.
There is usually more of this substance than the solute.
Definition of Residue:
The solute that remains after the solvent is evaporated.
Definition of Evaporation:
The process of boiling off the solvent (the liquid) from the solute (residue) in a solution.
Definition of Distillation:
A process whereby the solvent and solute are separated by the process of boiling and condensation.
Definition of Dilute Solution:
A solution that contains a small amount of solute compared to the amount of solvent.
Definition of Concentrated Solution:
A solution that contains a large amount of solute compared to the amount of solvent.
Definition of Saturated Solution:
A solution that can dissolve more solute.
Definition of Unsaturated Solution:
A solution in which no more solute will dissolve.
Definition of Crystal:
A solid with a defined angular shape.
Definition of Aqueous Solution:
A process whereby oxygen is forced through water.
Definition of Coagulation:
A process whereby small particles gather together.
Definition of Sedimentation:
A process used to separate small insoluble particles from the water by allowing the particles to settle down in undisturbed water.
Definition of Filtration:
The process whereby an insoluble substance is removed from a liquid by pouring it through a fine screen.
