How did Mary’s councillors take Elizabeth’s accession?
Her path to power was made easier by the acceptance of her accession by Mary’s councillors, on the morning of November 17th Nicholas Heath, Mary’s lord chancellor and Archbishop of Yotk announced Mary’s death and Elizabeth’s rightful succession.
Short-term, political elite supported Elizabeth’s accession.
Describe Elizabeth’s council at the beginning of her reign.
Cardinal pole had died the same day as Mary, giving Elizabeth flexibility to choose her advisors, Elizabeth was determined to have a small council with a preference to people who had shown her loyalty, Elizabeth was able to build up a core of professional men who enjoyed her confidence and therefore served for longer periods of time.

Recieved some degree of international conformation, the Spanish Ambassador had discussed with Elizabeth the prospect of marriage, nothing came of it but demonstrated that Philip was unwilling to disrupt the smoothness of Elizabeth’s succession.

January 15th, 1559 ; welcomed whole-heartedly by her citizens in her procession through the city and was greeted by orations and pagents, most with a strong protestant favour.
