What were the causes of the Wyatt Rebellion?
A
- Religious Motiviations, many supporters came from Maidstone, a protestant Stronghold - this motivation was identified in a book written by John Proctor, however this book was commissioned by the Government in an effort to divert attention away from the unpopular Spanish Marriage.
- Decline in the cloth trade, local politics.
- Resentment of the proposed marriage, implicit objective to oppose Mary and replace her with William Courtenay who would then marry Princess Elizabeth.

What was the significance of the Wyatt rebellion?
A
- Mary came to the realisation that as long as Lady Jane Grey lived, she would act as a figurehead for rebellion, Mary ordered the execution of Wyatt, Lady Jane Grey, her husband as well as about a hundred other conspirators.
- Showed that although protestants were a minority they couldn’t be ignored.
- Demonstrated the extent of suspicion surrounding the Spanish marriage.
- Elizabeth was rrested by the allegations could not be substantiated.
- Wyatt came close to success, outmaneuvred Duke of Norfolk and came close to securing the City of London.

What was Parliament’s reaction to the Spanish Marriage?
A
Parliament was not happy with the Spanish marriage, in 1554 they rejected a bill that specifically would have included Philip in the Treason Act and in 1555 they prevented his coronation.
