what is imprisonment in relation to public protection?

A
  • life sentence most serious punishment available
  • mandatory life sentences apply to a murder conviction
  • manslaughter, robbery and rape (discretionary life sentences)
  • could be argued that retribution takes place
  • intermediate sentences, no release date, suspended in 2012 but still people serving this sentence suggest prison is achieving aim of public protection
