what is imprisonment in relation to public protection?
A
- life sentence most serious punishment available
- mandatory life sentences apply to a murder conviction
- manslaughter, robbery and rape (discretionary life sentences)
- could be argued that retribution takes place
- intermediate sentences, no release date, suspended in 2012 but still people serving this sentence suggest prison is achieving aim of public protection

what is imprisonment in relation to rehabilitation?
A
- fixed term sentences, know the amount of time they will serve
- on licence until the end of the sentence with an additional post-sentence supervision of at least 12 months
