Police
Responsible for enforcing the law
Investigate crimes, collect evidence and arrest/ detain/ question suspects
Law creation
Parliament passes Acts
Judges create law by setting judicial precedents and by interpretations the meaning of statutes
Administration of the system: the ministry of justice and the home office verse most of the justice system and are responsible for its smooth running
The CPS
Advises the police in their investigations about lines of inquiry and how much evidence is needed
Assesses the evidence the police submit to it and decides whether to prosecute and what charges
Apply full code and evidential test
Prepares and presents prosecution case in court
Hm courts and tribunals service
Responsible for the administration of the courts and tribunals in England and Wales
Courts
The jury or magistrates will decide a verdict after hearing all the evidence from both sides and will issue a punishment: custodial sentence, community order, fine or a discharge. Base this off relevant statute and sentencing guidelines
Hm prison and probation service
Carries out the sentence given to offenders
Prison: supervised offenders in custody
Probation: supervised offenders serving their sentence in the community
