What is social control
society encourages people to follow laws
What is internal social control
when you control you’re own behaviour
What is rational ideology
When you believe in doing the right thing because it makes sense and feels right. Your conscience (inner voice) helps guide your actions
Tradition
Sometimes we follow rules because of culture and religion e.g. some people avoid eating meat on Good Friday because of religious beliefs
Internalising social rules and morality
means you’re accepted rules as your own not because someone is watching but because you believe there right e.g. not cheating in exam, taking turns, not jumping the queue
What is external social control
When people and groups outside try and make you follow rules e.g. police
Coercion
may be physical or non violent
physical = imprisonment
non violent= strikes and bans
Influence a persons decisions or action through fear of punishment or negative consequence
Fear of punishment
Punishment is used to stop people breaking the law (deterrence)
individual deterrence- punishment that is in order to deter or prevent further crimes e.g.suspended prison sentence
