Sarah’s Law and the Road Safety Campaign
What was Sarah’s Law?
After 8 year Sarah Payne died in 2000 her parents set about to make a law so people could have the right to know if a particular person was a sex offender.
Give 2 examples of individual campaigns.
Clare’s Law and The Double Jeopardy Law.
What was Clare’s Law?
After Clare was killed by her ex-boyfriend- George Appleton- ,despite her reporting him for threats and abuse multiple times and no action being taken, Clares father set about to create Clare’s Law where a person has the right to enable people to know about their partners violent past record.
What was The Double Jeopardy Law?
The double Jeopardy Law prevented people from being trialed for the same offence twice if found not guilty the first time. This was abolished some time after Billy Dunlops murder on Julie Hogg due to her family campaigning to abolish this law.
Give 2 examples of Pressure Group Campaigns.
The Snowdrop Campaign and The British Lung Foundation.
What was the Snowdrop Campaign?
The Snowdrop Campaign was established after the Dunblane massacre in 1996 killing 16 5-6 year olds and 1 teacher. The campaign eventually banned use and ownership of handguns in The Firearms (Amendment) Act 1977.
What was the British Lung Foundation?
The British Lung Foundation aims to prevent ling disease by campaigning for positive change in the UK’s lung health. It raises awareness on lung disease and played a huge part in the cigarette law changes.
