Acid and alkaline2 Flashcards
(9 cards)
Why rain water slightly acidic
5.6, because carbon dioxide mixes with rainwater to form carbonic acid.
Acid rain formation
Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are acidic gases.
When released into atmosphere,
they dissolve in water droplets to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid respectively.
Acidic droplets join to form clouds, fall acid rain.
Why global issue acidic rain?
Acidic gases spread by wind over long distances
Acid affect us buildings
Corrode metal objects (fence, bridge)
Corrode building and statues made of marble or limestone
Acid damage plant (3)
Destroy leaves of plants directly, no photosynthesis
Dissolves and washes away soil nutrients, without enough nutrients, they grow slowly
Increase acidity of soil – can’t grow well
Acid damage aquatic life (2)
Increase acidity of water – life can’t survive
Dissolves mineral in soil –> carry to bodies of water –> harmful mineral –> slow growht and reproduction
Why in well ventilated area
Vapour irritate and corrode our respiratory tract, skin and eyes
Never mix cleaners?
They produce toxic gas
Always add acid/alkali TO water
Large amount of heat released, cause violent boiling and splashing
