Acids and Bases Flashcards
What pH does an acid have?
1-6
What pH does an alkali have?
8-14
How to measure the pH of a solution
Universal Indicator
pH probe
pH paper
What do acids release
H+ ions
What do alkalis release
OH- ions
What is neutralisation
A reaction between an acid and an alkali to form a neutral substance
What is titration
A practical that allows you to find out how much acid is needed to neutralise an alkali (or vice versa) and therefor the concentration
Explain the steps of titration
Add 10ml of alkali to a conical flask and add 3 drops of indicator
Add acid of a known concentration using a burette to record the volume of acid you are adding
The indicator will change colour after neutralisation so record the volume once neutralisation has been achieved
What indicators should you use during titration
Single indicator
Litmus (blue in alkali and red in acid)
Phenophthalein (colourless in acids and pink in alkalis)
Methyl orange (yellow in alkali and red in acid)
What is a strong acid?
Ionise completely in water
All particles release H+ ions
