Fuel Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is an electrochemical cell
Basic system of two different electrodes in contact with an electrolyte
The chemical reaction between electrodes and electrolyte create a charge difference which allows the charge to flow and electricity to be created
What causes more charge to flow in a electrochemical cell
Greater difference in reactivity in electrode
Electrolyte
Why are some batteries non-rechargable
Reaction is not reversible so therefor reactants are used up
What is a fuel cell
An electrical cell that is supplied with fuel and oxygen and uses the energy released to create electricity
What is a hydrogen fuel cell?
Used hydrogen and oxygen as fuel to release energy
Positives of hydrogen fuel cells
Minimal pollutants produced
Cleaner energy
Negatives of hydrogen fuel cells
Hydrogen is highly explosive so difficult to store
