Acids And Bases Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a base
A base is a substance that causes red litmus paper to turn blue
What is an acid
An acid is a substance that causes blue litmus paper to turn red
Name three everyday acids
Lemon juice, rain water and vinegar
Name two lab acids
Hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid
Name three everyday bases
Toothpaste, bleach and indigestion tablets
Name three lab bases
Sodium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and limewater
What is the PH scale
- a scale which runs from one to ten
- indicates the level of basicity of a substance
- neutral solutions gave a PH if seven
- acids have a PH of less than seven
- bases have a PH of greater than seven
(Water is neutral)
What is an indicator
An indicator is a chemical which shows by means of a colour change, whether a substance is an acid or a base Eg. Litmus paper, universal indicator
What is neutralisation
Neutralisation is when an acid and a base react together and neutralise each other to form a salt and water
What does fire need to exist (fire triangle)
Heat, fuel and oxygen
What are fossil fuels
Fossil fuels are the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago
What are fossil fuels made of
Fossil fuels are made of hydrogen and carbon
What do fossil fuels produce when burnt
Water vapour and carbon dioxide
