Acids & Bases Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is the Brønsted-Lowry definition of an acid?
A substance that donates protons
What is the conjugate base of H3O+?
H2O
What is the conjugate base of H2PO4-?
PO43-
How do you know the number of hydronium ions in a solution if you are given the pH?
Do 1x10^-pH on calculator and it gives you the answer
How do you find the concentration of hydroxide ions in a solution if you are given the pH?
14-pH=number of hydroxide ions
Say you are given the number of hydroxide ions in a solution, how do you find the pH?
Example: hydroxide ions= 4.33x10^-8
Do log4.33x10^-8 which gives you 7.35. Then subtract 7.35 from 14 to get 6.64
What improvements did Brønsted-Lowry make over the Arrhenius definition for acids-bases?
They slightly altered the Arrhenius definition and greatly increased the number of compounds that qualify as bases
If the pH of an unknown solution is 4.25, what is pOH?
14-4.25=x. X=9.75
What does the value of Kw tell you about the auto ionization of water?
1x10^-14
A solution contains a hydronium ion concentration of 3.36 × 10−4 mol/L. What is the pH of the solution?
Log3.36x10^-4= x. X=3.47
A solution contains a hydroxide ion concentration of 6.43 × 10−9 mol/L. What is the pH of the solution?
Log6.43x10^-9=x. X=8.19. 14-8.19=5.8 which is the answer
An unknown solution was found in the lab. The pH of the solution was tested and found to be 3.98. What is the concentration of hydroxide ions in this solution?
14-3.98=x x=10.02
Then 10^-10.02 = 9.54 E-11 which is the answer
