Acids,Bases and Salts defintions Flashcards
(9 cards)
Acid
Releases H+ ions in aqueous solution. An acid is a proton donor.
Base
A species that is a proton acceptor.
Alkali
A type of base that dissolves in water forming hydroxide ions, OH-(aq) ions.
Why are ammonia and organic amino compounds bases?
These compounds contain a nitrogen atom with a lone pair of electrons. The lone pair on the nitrogen is able to form a bond with a H+ ion, hence the compound can act as a proton acceptor.
Salt
A chemical compound formed from an acid, when a H+ ion from the acid has been replaced by a metal ion or another positive ion, such as the ammonium ion, NH4+.
Ionic equation
An equation for a reaction showing what atoms actually change, the spectator ions are not in the ionic equation.
spectator ion
Ions that are present but take no part in the chemical reaction.
lone pair
An outer shell pair of electrons that is not involved in chemical bonding.
precipitate
A solid that comes out of solution.
