Active transport Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is active transport?
When substances move from areas of low to high concentration.
They go against concentraion gradient.
Why is active transport useful?
Allows cells to move sugars and ions through cell membrane.
What is needed for active transport to take place?
LOTS of mitochondria ─ Needs lots of energy (produced through respiration) to carry molecule across membrane.
What are two examples of active transport being used?
Animal cells ─ move sugars from gut/kidney tubules (sometimes lower con) into the blood. (sometimes higher con)
Why? Because it is needed for cell respiration.
─ special salt glands: remove excess salt from body (low concentration) to estuaries/seas (high concentration)
Plant cells ─ root hair cells move mineral ions in soil (dilute solution) into the plant (concentrated solution)
