Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
spreading out of the particles of a gas, or any solute in a solution.
What is the net movement of diffusion?
from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration (down the concentration gradient)
How does movement in diffusion happen?
Random movement (of molecules or ions) causes them to bump into eachother ─ scatter around.
What affects the rate of diffusion? Why?
The greater the difference between two areas of concentration, the faster the rate of diffusion.
As temperature increases, the faster rate. particles move more quickly, so diffusion is quicker.
How are dissolved substances moved?
Through diffusion, from liver cells into blood plasma.
How is oxygen & carbon dioxide moved?
Oxygen ─ Through diffusion from the blood cells into cells that need blood.
Carbon dioxide ─ Through diffusion from body cells into red blood cells into air of lungs.
Adaptations surrounding diffusion?
Increasing surface area ─ area over which diffusion can take place is increased, so faster rate of diffusion.
