Activities Of The DS Flashcards
(6 cards)
Ingestion
Intake of food into the mouth
Propulsion
Active propelling of food from one digestive organ to the next
Mechanical digestion
Breaking down food into smaller prices thereby preparing food for further degradation by enzymes
Chemical digestion
Breakdown of large, insolvable macromolecule into their smaller, solvable building blocks by enzymes
Absorption
Movement of soluble food molecules across the call of the gut into the blood stream or lymph
Occurred mostly in the small intestines, this is where drugs are absorbed
Inflammation (IBD) or other problems with the mucosa can effect the absorption (e.g chronns disease)
There are a number of transport systems, most rely on secondary active transport to carry nutrients across the cell membrane
Water is absorbed by
Defaecation
Removal of indigestible material from the body
