Activities Of The Small Intestine Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
Small intestine
A
- food entering here is only partially digested
- carbs and protein digestion has begun but little fat digestion
- by the time food reaches the end of the small intestine, digestion is complete and beset all nutrient absorption has occurred
- the macrovilli of the small intestine cells contain brush boarder enzymes
- these break disaccharides into single sugars and complete protein digestion
- intestinal juice is relatively enzyme poor
- however, food is deluged with digestive enzymes from pancreatic juice from the pancreas
2
Q
Pancreatic juice
A
Contains digestive enzymes: Pancreatic amylase Protease e.g trypsin Lipases Nucleases
3
Q
Bile
A
Made in the liver
Stored in the gall bladder
Gall bladder squirts bile into the duodenum
Bile emulsified lipids, keep in fat droplets - this helps lipases to digest fats
4
Q
Rectum
A
Forms the last few inches of the digestive tract and is expendable to allow the temporary storage of faeces
5
Q
Anal canal
A
Controlled by 2 sphincters internal
Terminates in the anus and exit of the DS
6
Q
DS SUMMED UP
A
The DS carried out 6 processes to achieve its role Ingestion Mechanical digestion Chemical digestion Absorption Defeaction
