CITY DIONISIA- origin
When the statue of Dionysus arrived in Athens during their alliance with Eleutherae, the Athenians initially rejected it and were struck by a plague affecting male genitals. After accepting the statue, the plague ended, and Dionysus was honored with celebrations and theatrical festivals throughout Athens.
When?
Mid-march, five days
Procession?
The torchlight procession at the City Dionysia re-enacted the arrival of Dionysus’ statue in the 6th century BC. During the festival, there was men carrying model phalluses.
Pompe?
The grand procession involved carrying the wooden statue of Dionysus into the sanctuary, accompanied by drinking, dancing, and general celebration.
Dithyramb?
A choral song and dance written in honour of Dionysus.
Komos?
Only men took part, carrying model phalluses as offerings to Dionysus, symbolizing fertility.
Opening ceremony?
The priest would sacrifice a piglet before each of the ten generals poured a libation to the gods.
Comedy play?
The plays reflected the increased political freedom in 5th-century Athens and often focused on themes like war, politics, and social life, sometimes reversing traditional roles (e.g., slaves being superior to masters).
Tragedy play?
Tragedies were performed alongside satyr plays for comic relief. They were based on famous myths and historical events, focusing on human suffering.
Judging + prize giving?
On the fifth day, judges ranked the plays, and their lists were placed in an urn. The eponymous archon then drew five lists to decide the winner, who was awarded a garland of ivy, Dionysus’s symbol.
