Acute Care Isolation Techniques and Infection Control Flashcards
(34 cards)
Nosocomial Infections
Hospital-acquired infections
can prolong stay
increase treatment expense
Infection Cycle
Reservoir
Host
Infection Cycle
Exit
Process or mechanism that microorganisms exits the host
Infection Cycle
transmission
process of infection transfer from one host to another though direct or indirect conduct
Infection Cycle
Infection
state of active multiplication and invasion of the microorganism occurs in a new host
Infection Cycle
Susception
state of being infected
Preventing nosocomial infection
- adhere to recommended prevention practices, such as handwashing & PPE
- sanitize equipment to decontaminate and clean soiled items
Are all nosocomial infections preventable?
No
Some reflect influence of advanced age, chronic diseases, medications, AIDS, irradiation
Universal Precautions
Treat all human blood and bloody fluids as if:
As if they were known to be infectious for HIV, Hepatitis B, and other bloodborne pathogens
Standard precautions
Hand hygiene
Use of PPE
Safe injection practices
Safe handling of potentially contaminated equipment or surfaces in pt environment
Respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette
includes contact with all body fluids exept sweat
Components of standard precaution
PPE
Patient placement/isolation
Soiled linen handling
Decontamination of environmental surfaces
Prevention of inuries from sharp objects
Precautions w/ used pt care equipment
Standard precautions: general guidelnes
hand hygiene before/after
use gloves
use proper PPE when body fluid contact is possible
Handwashing
before/after pt contact, even with gloves
vigorous brief (20 sec)
refrain from pt care if u have weeping dermatitis or exudative lesion
Mask/Goggles/Face shield
wear when aerosolization or splattering is likely
Gloves
when contacting bodily fluid, blood, tissues, contaminated surfaces, skin rash
Gowns/Aprons
when splattering of blood, body fluid is possible
Resuscitation
use of a mouthpiece with one way breathing valve
Needle/Sharp Disposal
Never place cap on used needle
dispose in proper container
never place IV tubing with needle attached into trash
Soiled linens
Types of isolation
category specific
groups of diseases into categories that require similar infection control measures
Types of isolation
Disease specific
considers each infectious diseas individually so that only equipment that is absolutely necessary is used
Procedure if you are exposed
Clean area exposed w/ coious soap and water
Report exposure ASAP
Disinfection
eliminates many or all pathogenice microorgansms, except bacterial spores, on inanimate objects
Sterilization
Describes a process that destroys or eliminates all forms of microbial life
