Define addiction
A disorder in which an individual takes a substance or engages in a behaviour which is pleasurable but eventually becomes compulsive with harmful consequences. Marked by a physiological and/or psychological dependence, tolerance and withdrawal.
Define physical dependence
Can be demonstrated by the presence of unpleasant physical symptoms referred to as withdrawal syndrome. If the person suddenly abstains from the drug. The person depends on the drug to avoid these withdrawal symptoms and to function normally. Physical dependence is often accompanied by increased tolerance to the drug, in that the user requires increased doses in order to abstain the desired effects.
Define physiological dependence
Occurs when a drug becomes a central part of an individuals thoughts, emotions, and activities. It can be demonstrated by a strong urge to use the drug, despite being aware of any possible harmful effects associated with its use.
