Which Australian organisation is responsible for civil aviation support services including the Aeronautical Information Service?
Airservices Australia
What is the Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) responsible for?
The collection, collation and dissemination of aeronautical information and instructions relating to the safety, regularity and efficiency of air navigation within the areas covered.
What is the area of responsibility of the AIS?
The entire territory of Australia and its associated airspace, and
for the airspace over the high seas encompassed by the Brisbane and
Melbourne FIRs
Where is the International NOTAM Office established and what is its purpose?
An International NOTAM Office (NOF) is established at Canberra (YBBBYNYX) for
the purpose of the international exchange of NOTAM.
What is the role of the NOTAM Office (NOF)?
Airservices Australia’s NOTAM Office is responsible for the issuing of NOTAM.
What is the Transition Layer?
The airspace between the transition altitude and the transition level.
Define SARWATCH
A generic term covering SAR alerting based either on full position reporting procedures, scheduled reporting times (SKEDS), or SARTIME
Decode the following acronyms:
ABN
HJ
H24
OCTA
RVSM
ABN Aerodrome Beacon
HJ Sunrise to sunset
H24 Continuous day and night service
OCTA Outside controlled airspace
RVSM Reduced vertical separation minima
Which flights in G airspace are provided with a Directed Traffic Information
service?
IFR flights
When is a Surveillance Information Service (SIS) available to VFR aircraft?
On request to VFR pilots within surveillance coverage in Class E and G airspace
To whom is an alerting service (alerting Search and Rescue agencies) provided?
All aircraft provided with ATS, and insofar as practicable any aircraft having filed a flight plan or otherwise known to ATS, and to any aircraft known or believed to be the subject of unlawful interference.
Where would you find details of Communication and Navigation facilities and services?
ERSA (En Route Supplement Australia)
What is the accepted tolerance of an altimeter?
With an accurate QNH set, the altimeter(s) should read the nominated elevation
to within 60FT.
What deviation from elevation would require an IFR aircraft’s altimeter to be
deemed unserviceable?
If an altimeter has an error in excess of ± 75FT
Must IFR lodge a flight notification?
IFR flights require the submission of comprehensive flight notification and the
transmission of in-flight progress reports at regular intervals. SARWATCH is based primarily on the receipt of these reports by ATS.

What charts are available for visual operations?
World Aeronautical Charts (WAC), WAC, VNC (Visual Navigation Chart), Visual Terminal Chart (VTC)
WAC – 1:1,000,000 scale. Topographical info, navaids
VNC – 1:500,000 scale. Aeronautical overlay of controlled airspace over topographical info, some radio comms and nav data
VTC – 1:250,000 scale. Designed for use in terminal areas, up to and including FL180
Enroute Charts (ERCs) and Terminal area Charts are designed for IFR flights.
What flights are ERC (L) designed for?
ERCs-L are intended for use primarily up to and including FL200.
