What is an Affective Disorder?
Affective/mood disorders are characterised by strong emotions which influence an individual’s ability to function normally.
What is Depression?
Depression is one of the most common affective disorders, there are 2 types:
Major - an episode of depression that can occur suddenly.
Manic (bipolar) - alternation between two extreme moods, occurring in a regular cycle.
DSM-IV Classification
5/+ OF THE FOLLOWING:
Insomnia.
Fidgeting/lethargy.
Feelings of worthlessness/guilt.
Inability to concentrate.
Recurrent thoughts of death.
ICD-10 Classification
Depressed mood.
Loss of interest/enjoyment.
Reduced energy.
Reduced concentration/attention.
Reduced self-esteem/self-confidence.
Feelings of worthlessness/guilt.
Pessimism.
Ideas of self-harm/suicide.
Insomnia.
Reduced appetite.
