A

The Sharpeville Massacre took place on March 21, 1960. Police opened fire on blacks peacefully protesting the policies f the National Party government. 69 people killed. Event that forced Mandela and the African National Congress to start using violent means (not against citizens though).

A

Efes live in small groups of 10-100 members.

A

Respected Older male was group “leader” , but only his opinions mattered a little. Didn’t have major power. There was no major power source. Efe settled arguments through long discussions.

Yoruba lived in villages made of mud walls and thatched roofs. Had a Monarchy ruled by a tyrant. Each town had a chief, chiefs later gained more power. Polytheistic religion.

A

Always been a context of unrest in Middle East and North Africa. Spontaneous prodemocracy protests have been held all over region by both pro and anti west. Peaceful protest agains Qaddafi in February turned violent. Qaddafi forces targeted Civilians so west was act to intervene. West helped with a good, but flawed intervention.

What was the crisis in Sierra Leone?

A

Revolutionary United Forces (anti-gov) accuse Gov of being corrupt but are also corrupt themselves and commit horrendous human right violations. RUF accused of mismanaging diamonds and mineral resources. RUF started out good but got corrupted by greed. UN drew week peace agreement in 1999 that gave amnesty to human rights violating RUF.

What is the crisis in Côte d’Ivoire?

A

Following presidential election of 2010 both candidates tied. International supporters said opponent won. But current President wouldn’t accept it. So opponent president supporters caused a civil war. 100,000 fled into Liberia. Thousand were killed in what observers found to be mass human rights violations.
