Introduction of themes
One of the main themes in the poem after the titanic by Derek Mahon is _____, as the speaker Bruce Ismay is critiqued for serving the titanic while other died, Mahon skillfully highlights the theme through powerful imagery, similes and passing of time through alliterations.
Theme of isolation
In the poem after the titanic Mahon uses the theme of isolation to depict how Ismay has not interacted with anyone since the titanic has sunk, we know this as in the poem it says “now I hid in a lonely house behind the sea” and “ I will take my morphine a see no one “ this shows that Ismany is isolated as he isn’t leaving his house or interacting with anyone as he is scared he will be criticised for surviving the sinking.
Theme of Guilt
Mahon shows the mental torment of Bruce Ismay, a survivor of the titanic who is criticised for surviving the sinking of the Titanic while others died. Mahon uses the theme of guilt in the poem to present Ismay inner voice allowing the reader to feel the deep shame in the poem. In the poem guilt is shown when it says “I sank as far that night as any hero” this shows guilt as even tho Bruce Ismay survived the sinking of the Titanic he feels like a part of him died that night also.
Theme of death
The theme of death is shown in the poem after the titanic as when Mahon says “all those dim lost faces I never understood” this shows them theme of death as Ismay saw all the people who died that night. He was on the lifeboat and he took one of the sport that should have belonged to someone else.

In the poem after the Titanic by Derek Martin Mahon uses skill for poetic techniques such as metaphors, similes, personification and alliteration is that really depict how Bruce Ismay was feeling after the Titanic sank show these in many ways in the poem.
Poetic techniques simile
Derek Mahan uses many similes in the poem after the Titanic that really show her Bruce is made was feeling the night the Titanic sink he uses the simile sank as far as any hero. This shows that Bruce is my fat like a part of him that night even though he survived and he was criticised for surviving and how he should’ve let someone else survive.
Poetic technique alliteration
Uses an effective alliteration to describe how he doesn’t see anyone anymore alliteration is the showers of April the flowers of May mean nothing to me nor the late line of June. This is an alliteration as it says the late line of June and this really shows how he says nobody and just sit in his bed and ignores how the months and the years change.
Poetic technique metaphor
Maing uses very effective poetic techniques in the poem but I think one of his most effective ones were the talent we’ve spoken to in half boxes suddenly at my door this is a metaphor that the power uses it’s created an vocative image as the speaker is describing the haunting memories of the sea and brought broken toys and half boxes were washed up along the shore. This is made about the toys and hot boxes reminded him of ladies and children who died on the ship that night so this is a very effective man for that Bruce may used.
Personification poetic technique
Mahon use is an amazing use of personification in the poem by saying in a lonely house behind the sea this depicts how is my has nobody since the Titanic sunk apart from his gardener and as he scared he would be criticised so he just sits in his house and his garden tells everybody how he sits in his bed and takes his morphine and sees no one
Personal response
I think the after the Titanic by Derek Ryan really to pick Sabre is Mayfield during the sinking of the Titanic and even though he survived he felt like he died Derek man really help me understand what happened during the sinking so overall I really enjoyed the poem. it’s very interesting to study about the sinking of the Titanic
