Annual
A plant that completes its lifecycle within 12 months (germination-death)
Perennial
A plant that continues to grow from year to year
Fibre
Fine hair-like structure in plants used to make textiles. May be soft ‘hairs’ found in seeds (cotton) or tough found on plant stem (hemp)
Biennial
Plants that grow from seed in the first year and flowers in the second year.
Legume
Group of plants that are able to capture nitrogen from the air, by bacteria living on their roots. Legume seed is always in a pod.
Oilseed
Seeds that are used to produce vegetable oils
Cereal
Grain for food from grass-like plants
Intensive
Small areas of crop grown by individual farmers (less than 50 hectares) some operations are performed manually
Broadacre
(Extensive) large areas of crop are grown by individual farmers (typically over 1000 hectares) crop is cultivated, sprayed and harvested mechanically
