Agreements And Management Flashcards
(11 cards)
2015 Paris conference
First attempt to establish tough binding greenhouse gas emission targets on all member states of the UN.
Members agreed to report every 5 years on efforts to reduce greenhouse gases
Unilateral commitment
Industries allocated a capped emission allowance each year
Fines if the exceeded
Bilateral comittments
In 2014 China and USA signed agreement to limit emissions
Grassland carbon storage
Carbon storage could be improved by:
Adding soil fertiliser
Irrigation, improved productivity of plants
Croplands carbon storage
Improve carbon storage:
Mulching (protective layer of organic matter)
Using improved crop varietys
Forest and tree crops carbon storage
Protection of existing forest can preserve current soil carbon stores
Reforesting degraded areas
Modifying deforestation
Consumers encouraged to only buy wood from certified brands
Carbon sequestration
Technology that can capture up to 90% of all CO2 emissions produced from fossil fuels in electricity generation and industrial processes
How does carbon sequestration capture CO2?
Separation of CO2 from other gases by one of 3 methods:
Pre-combustion , post combustion, oxy-fuel combustion
Where is carbon stored after carbon sequestration?
Transport by pipeline or ship to storage location
Stored underground in oil/gas fields, deep aquifers or the ocean
Improved aviation practices
Towing aircraft while on the ground
100% occupancy of all seats
Improved aerodynamics
