17
Q

What are some sheep diseases?

A

Flystrike - where blowflies lay eggs on soiled wool or open wounds, maggots burrow into the sheep’s flesh and feed on their tissues. Can cause significant pain, illness, and potentially death
Blue Tongue (BTV) - a notifiable (Animal Plant Health Agency), viral disease caused by biting midges, causes fever, lameness, ulcers in the mouth and nose, and in some cases, a blue-colored tongue

18
Q

What is a gross margin for sheep?

A

Output = livestock sales, wool capital grants
Variable costs = Feed, vet / med, bedding and housing

19
Q

What are the key provisions of the Agriculture Act 2020

A

Established UK farming policy post Brexit
Shift on focus to public goods by removing BPS and replacing with ELMS
Increased food security
Imposed changes to AHA tenancy succession

20
Q

How did the Agriculture Act 2020 change AHA succession?

A

No minimum retirement age
Removed commercial unit test
Introduced suitability test

21
Q

What are the different tests for AHA succession?

A

Commerical unit test = Applicant must not be an occupant of another ‘commercial unit’ of agricultural land
Suitability test = Applicant must show they have the ability to farm to a ‘high commercial standard’ of efficienct production and care for the environment
Livlihood / eligibility test = Close living relative, spouse, civil partner, child or sibling. The holding must be the applicants main / only source of income for the las 5-7 years

22
Q

What are your sheep breeds and flock number?

A

Welsh Hill Speckle Face - Rare breed
North Country & Welsh Mules
Cotswolds
Suffolk Rams

950 Ewes

23
Q

How many acres makes up a hectare?

24
Q

What is Agricultural Land Classification?
(ALC)

A

A system used to assess and categorize the quality of farmland based on its suitability for different agricultural uses

25
What are the different ALCs?
Grade 1:Excellent quality, suitable for a wide range of crops with high yields Grade 2: Very good quality, with minor limitations that may affect crop choice or yield Grade 3: Good to moderate quality, with more limitations affecting crop choices and yields
26
What is the average grazing rent in your area?
£60-£100 / acre
27
What is the flock structure at Burghley?
We have a closed flock, where we breed our own ewes within and for the flock. Lambing is done outdoors, so tupping commences in November for lambing to happen from mid-April which usually takes a month. We then have around 1,500 lambs, to sell, keep and slaughter. Around 20% of lambs are kept to allow for succession and replacement within the flock.
28
What are the different types of lambs? (3)
Fat lambs = grown well, sold for meat - makes up 50% of lambs Ewe lambs = good condition , kept for succession - makes up 20% of lambs Store lambs = not quite up to weight, kept over winter to fatten up and sell in the early spring market
29
Flock breeds
Welsh Hill Speckle Face Put to Clynn Tup for a Welsh Mule Put to WHSP for pure breed Obligated to graze 20% rare breed under HLS
30
What is the average dead-weight of a lamb?
16 - 22 kg
31
What is the average liveweight of a lamb?
42 - 48 kg
32
What is the average liveweight price of a lamb?
320 - 360p/kg Depends more on condition = £150
33
What is the average rent per hectare for an FBT in your area?
£270 / hectare £110 / acre
34
What is the average rent per hectare for an AHA in your area?
£200 / hectare £80 / acre
35
Who is the Secretary of State for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
The Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP
36
Who is the president of th Country Land and Business Association? (CLA)
Victoria Vyvyan
37
What are some of the restrictions and obligations under your HLS scheme?
10 year term Must have management control of land Compliance with Statutory Management Requirements (SMRs) Keep land in Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition (GAEC) Refrain from over-grazing Protect historic features Keep records
38
What penalities are available for non-compliance with HLS?
Withold future payments Terminate agreemend Ask for payments to be returned with interest applied Prohibit applicant from future applications for 2 years
39
What are some Ts & Cs under HLS?
Not to cause disturbence to soil Maintain exisiting sward Maintaining certain grass height Take one cut, removing trash on July 14th
40
How do you calculate stocking density?
By determining the amount of space available per animal within a given area, or livestock units / ha
41
What are some livestock units and what is their ideal stocking density?
Sheep = 0.12 Horse = 1 Cattle (2yr) = 1 1.5 - 2.5 LU/ha
42
What was the difference in rent / acre on the future farm strategy?
1/4 ratio AHA = £60 - £80 / acre FBT = £85 - £180 / acre
