Airframe 5 Flashcards
(34 cards)
What is the purpose of a rotorcraft cyclic pitch control?
To change the pitch of the main rotor blades during its cycle of rotation
What are the three types of hydraulic fluids?
Synthetic ether base
Polyalphaoelefins ( Polly- al-Fay-la-fins)
Phosphate esters
What methods are used to drive turn and bank/slip indicators?
Vacuum, air pressure or electricity
What is the meaning of swinging a compass?
Correcting for deviations by adjusting the compensating magnets
Name at least two items that should be looked for during an inspection of a magnetic compass:
Security of attachment
Correct readings at various headings
The bowl should be full and without bubbles or discoloration
The scale should be readable
Moving parts should easily work
In what way do magnetic fields generated by electrical equipment and steel parts in the airplane affect a magnetic compass?
They deflect the compass from correct alignment with the earths magnetic field
What quantity is accurately measured by a capacitance type fuel quantity indicating system?
The mass of the fuel
Name several types of electrically operated devices that would be considered intermittent loads of an electrical system:
Landing gear motors
Cowl and wing flap motors
Radio transmitters
Under what conditions must a switch be derated from its nominal rating?
When used with inductive circuits, circuits with high in-rush current, and with DC motors
At what point in a circuit should the protective device be located?
As close to the source as possible
What could cause an AC electric motor to run too slowly?
Lack of lubrication, defective wiring, or low voltage
Prior to conducting a continuity check, what must be done to an electrical circuit?
The power must be turned off
What warning system may be required when a nickel-cadmium battery is installed in an aircraft?
A battery temperature monitoring system
How may a photoelectric smoke detector be checked?
By operating a switch in the test circuit
Name 2 types of smoke detection instruments used in aircraft:
Light refraction
Ionization
What are 2 types of installed fire extinguishing systems?
CO2
Halogenated hydrocarbons (HALON)
What indications may be caused by kinks and sharp bends in the sensing elements of a fire detection system?
False fire warnings caused by a short
What does a thermal switch fire detection system consist of?
Heat-sensitive units that complete electrical circuit at certain temperatures, which triggers a warning
How are thermal switch units wired?
Parallel with each other and in series with the light
How is a thermocouple fire warning system different from a thermal switch system?
Thermal switch works once a specific temperature is reached
Thermocouple works based on the rate of temperature rise
How are Fenwal sensing elements wired?
In series to a control unit
How are the detector units in a double-loop fenwal system wired?
In parallel between 2 complete loops of wiring
Describe a continuous loop detection system:
One or more wires embedded in a special ceramic core that change resistance with a change in temperature
What is a swash plate?
Transmit control inputs from the collective and cyclic controls to the main rotor blades.
