Airway Flashcards
How to measure for the size of the nasopharyngeal device?
from the targus → the nose
(soft to soft)
How to measure for the size of the oropharyngeal device?
the tip of teeth → angle of mandible
What way do we put an oropharyngeal device in children?
Up to 11-12 years old
Put ‘the right way in’
*this is due to the anatomical development of hard palate
What is the only definitive airway?
ET tube = endotracheal airway
How many litres does the nasal cannula deliver?
1 - 6 L/ min
(about 20% of O2)
How many litres of O2 does the simple face mask deliver?
6-12 L/min
(35-60% of oxygen)
*minimum of 6L as otherwise the CO2 would accumulate by rebreathing)
How many litres of oxygen does the venturi mask deliver?
It depends - adaptors are used to give specific % of oxygenation
How many litres of O2 does non-rebreather mask deliver?
Non-rebreather mask (aka Hudson mask)
15 L/min
- (less can accumulate CO2) + do not leave on the patient for too long -> we need to treat the cause
- How it works: a bag is a reservoir to concentrate O2
Litres of O2 and use of high flow nasal cannula
- used mostly in paeds
- delivers up to 60L (30-100%)
- +ive end respiratory pressure to open up the airways
3 criteria to suspect anaphylaxis
- life-threatening problems of airway/breathing/circulation
- sudden/rapid progression
- skin/mucosal changes
