Airway and breathing sounds Flashcards
(24 cards)
Normal sound of tracheal sounds?
Harsh, hollow
Normal sound of bronchial sounds?
High pitched, loud, hollow
Normal sound of bronchovesicular sounds?
Low pitched, hollow (Anterior & Posterior)
Normal sound of vesicular sounds?
Low pitched, blowing (Anterior & Posterior)
Abnormal sounds: Wheezing?
- High pitched, musical
- Air is moving through a narrow airway
Abnormal sounds: When is wheezing heard?
- Heard on inspiration and expiration
- Continuous
Abnormal sounds: What is associated with wheezing?
- Asthma
- Sputum
- Inflammation
- COPD
Abnormal sounds: Crackles? Both types
- Fine- hair moving through fingers, woodburning. Clears with coughing
- Coarse- Low, bubbling (wet) sound. Not cleared when coughing
Abnormal sounds: Why is Crackles heard? When?
- Air being forced through narrow airway or alveoli
- Heard on inspiration the most
- Discontinuous
Abnormal sounds: What is associated with crackles?
- Alveoli pulmonary edema
- congestive heart failure
Abnormal sounds: Stridor?
-Obstruction in the upper airway (larynx or trachea), high pitched
Abnormal sounds: When is stridor heard?
Mostly heard on inspiration
Abnormal sounds: What is associated with stridor?
- Croup
- Foreign body in airway
Abnormal sounds: Rhonchi?
- Low pitched rattling sounds
- Sounds like a snore
- Caused by muscus in the larger airway
Abnormal sounds: When is Rhonchi heard?
-Heard on inspiration and expiration
Abnormal sounds: What is associated with rhonchi?
Pneumonia, Bronchitis
Nature of airway sounds: Possibilities if clear?
- Metabolic problems
- Myocardial infarction
- Pulmonary embolus
- Hyperventilation
Nature of airway sounds: Possibilities if stridor?
- Complete or partial obstruction?
- Consider Anaphylaxis
Nature of airway sounds: Possibilities if Rhonchi?
-Pneumonia
Nature of airway sounds: What to do if Rhonchi?
- Sit patient upright
- Consider fluid bolus
- Refer to CPAP procedure
Nature of airway sounds: Possibilities if crackles?
- CHF
- Pulmonary edema
Nature of airway sounds: Possibilities if Wheezing?
- Asthma
- COPD
Nature of airway sounds: First treatment for wheezing?
- Assist patient with their own Albuterol (if available)
- Consider CPAP
Nature of airway sounds: wheezing. What to do for impending respiratory failure, unable to tolerate nebulizer treatments?
- Administer Epinephrine 1mg/ml, .3mg IM
- If a second nebulized treatment is needed, administer STEROID (Prednisone 50mg tablet or Methylprednisolone 125mg IV)
