1

Oxidation of alcohols: oxidising agent

K2Cr2O7 + acid

2

Oxidation of alcohols to only get an aldehyde

Distilling off product: collect in a condensing tube dripping down to remove it from the oxidising agent and to collect it in another beaker

3

Oxidation of alcohols to only get a carboxylic acid

Heat under reflux: have condensing tube dripping vertically so the aldehyde drips back down into the flask and is oxidised into a carboxylic acid (2nd oxidation)

4

Fehlings test result with an aldehyde

Blue solution turns to brick red ppt

5

Fehlings test result with a ketone

Blue solution does not change

6

Tollens test result with an aldehyde

Silver mirror formed

7

Tollens test result with a ketone

No change

8

What must be added to the Tollens reagent?

Ammonia (alkaline solution)

9

What catalyst is used in the dehydration of alcohols

Conc. H2SO4

10

What product is formed in the dehydration of alcohols?

Alleged
