Alkanes and Alkenes Flashcards
(14 cards)
What do Alkanes molecules contain?
Single bonds only
What does it mean that the molecules of Alkanes contain single bonds only?
They are saturated with hydrogen
They contain as much hydrogen as possible
What are Alkenes?
Unsaturated hydrocarbons
What do Alkene molecules contain?
At least one double bond between carbon atoms
What are addition reactions?
Where other atoms can be added to the molecule as there is a presence of at least one carbon double bond in Alkanes.
What are the two elements that can be added in the reaction of addition reactions?
Hydrogen and bromine
What is it called when hydrogen is added to an Alkene?
Hydrogenation
What happens when hydrogen is added to an Alkene?
The corresponding alkane is formed
How is addition reactions carried out?
By heating the Alkene under pressure, in the presence of a metallic catalyst.
What is formed when bromine is added to an Alkene?
A dibromoalkane
What happens during dibromoalkane?
The double bond breaks and two bromine atoms attach
Why is the reaction of dibromoalkane useful?
It can be used to test for the presence of an Alkene
What happens when orange bromine water reacts with the Alkene?
The colour disappears and the product formed is colourless
What are Alkanes?
Saturated hydrocarbons
