Bonding Flashcards
(8 cards)
Why do metals have high m and b points?
Lots of energy is required to break the strong attraction between positively and negatively charged ions
Why is it easy to shape metals?
Metal atoms are arranged in layers
When a force is applied, the layers can slide over each other
Very few bonds are broken therefore only a small amount of energy is required
Why are metals such good conductors?
The delocalised electrons are free to move
Explain simple molecular substances
Have low m and b points, because molecules are held together by weak intermolecular forces. Therefore little energy is required
Do simple molecular substances conduct electricity?
No. There are no charges free to move
What are the strongest bonds called?
Single covalent bonds
What is the result of metals giving up their outer electrons?
It leaves positively charged ions surrounded by free electrons
What is metallic bonding?
The electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons
