- What are Pathogens?
Ans - Pathogens are disease causing microorganisms.
- Pathogens enter our body through food water and air. If we are ingesting and breathing in pathogens how is it that we are not falling ill?
Ans - Because we have an immune system.
- What is an immune system?
Ans- An Immune system comprises of cells, tissues nad organs that work together to defend the body from the attacks of the pathogens.
- What is immunity?
Ans - Immunity is the protection given by our body against a particular disease.
- What is allergy?
Ans - The hypersensitivity of our body to certain substances around us is called as allergy.
- What are allergens?
Ans - Allergens are the substances that cause allergy.
- What are the 2 types of allergens? Name a few examples of the 2 types of allergens.
Ans - The 2 types of allergens are food allergens and non food allergens.
Food items that cause allergy is called as food allergen.
Ex : Milk, fish, peanut, nuts, egg, shellfish, wheat and its derivatives etc.
Allergens other than food are called non food allergens.
Ex : Pet hair, Dust, wasp sting, mites, medicines containing sulphur or penicillin, pollen grains, perfumes, cosmetics, paints, change of season etc.
- Explain in detail the entry routes of allergens.
Ans - There are 3 entry routes for allergens
- The nose : Allergens in the air enter through our nose. The allergens causing asthma and hay fever enter through our nose.
- The mouth : Food allergens enter through our mouth and cause symptoms like swelling and itching of tongue, lips, pharynx and sometimes throat. These symptoms are called oral allergy.
- The Skin : Allergens when come in contact with skin cause redness and blistering on the skin. These symptoms are called contact dermatitis
- What are Hives?
Ans - The red, itchy patches on the skin caused due to allergy are called hives.
- What is the Photosensitivity?
Ans - The allergy that some people develop when exposed to sunlight is called Photosensitivity.
- Name a few common symptoms of allergic reactions.
Ans - Constant sneezing
- Severe bouts of cough
- Laboured, noisy intake of breath (wheezing)
- Mucus congestion of nasal passage
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Itchy throat
- Stomach ache, diarrhoea, vomiting
- Hives
- Feeling fatigue
- Irritability
- What is anaphylactic shock?
Ans - An Anaphylactic shock is a life threatening condition in which internal tissues swell up and make it difficult for a person to breath. The shock may cause convulsions and even lead to coma or death.
- What are the 2 types of allergies? Name examples of each.
Ans - Allergies are of 2 types, Seasonal and Perennial.
Seasonal Allergies occur during a particular season.
Ex : Hay fever
Perennial allergies are allergies that can occur anytime of the year.
Ex : Dust allergy
- Which King was killed by an allergic reaction? What was the allergen?
Ans - King Menses of Egypt was killed by a sting of a wasp somewhere between 3640 BCE to 3300 BCE.
- Which Roman Emperor’s son was allergic to horses? What did the Roman emperor do because his son was allergic to horses?
Ans - Roman Emperor Claudius’s son Britannicus was allergic to horses, So the emperor adopted a son, Nero to do the honour of riding at the head of the army.

Ans - 1800
- Which doctor described hay fever as a disease that affected the upper respiratory tract? Which year did he describe this?
Ans - Dr John Bostock described it in 1819.
- In 1869 what did charles Blakely discover?
Ans - In 1869 Charles blakely did the first ever skin test and discovered that pollen grains cause hay fever.
- In 1902 who coined the term anaphylaxis?
Ans - Charles Richet and Paul Portier.
- In 1906 What did Austrian paediatrician Clemen von Pirquet coin?
Ans - He coined the temr allergy

Ans - Allergy is formed from the greek word Alol which means change in state.
- What are some precautions to avoid getting allergy for people who have them?
Ans - Avoiding coming in contact with allergens
- Keep Robust immunity
- Avoid known food allergens
- Save yourself from insect stings
- KNow the names of medicines you are allergic to
- Always inform your caretaker/parents/teachers what you are allergic to.
