from childhood’s hour I have not been as others were
I have not seen as others saw
I could not bring my passions from a common spring
from the same source i have not taken my sorrow (when he views ‘scary’ and sad things, he does not feel sad, but rather, he saw the beauty of it.)
I could not awaken my heart to joy at the same tone (i could not find myself as happy as others)
and all i loved, i loved alone (his fascination for scary things)
then, in my childhood, in the dawn of a most stormy life (his life to be seen as turbulent and bleak)
(the dawn) was drawn from every depth of good (of which others thought) and ill (the dawn, which haunted him because he could not see the beauty in it)
the mystery which binds me still (how to be happy and be like others, to see things the way others do)
from the torrent, or the fountain (callback to the spring?)
from the red cliff of the mountain (bathed in the hue of the sun)
from the sun that around me rolled (the sunlight was everywhere, enough space for the sun to roll and bask in)
in its autumn tint of gold
from the lightning in the sky
as it passed me flying by (which reminded him how far away dawn was, how far away he was from reaching it and understanding it)
from the thunder, and the storm
and the cloud that took the form
of a demon in my view (which was edgar, because he found himself different, and that it was him, that made his life so miserable, like a storm stirring on)
(when the rest of Heaven was blue)
