1st amendment
Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the press, freedom of Assembly (gather), right to petition government
2nd amendment
Right to keep and bear arms
3rd amendment
Prohibits government from forcing citizens to quarter soldiers in their homes
4th amendment
Protects against unlawful searches or seizures by the government.
5th amendment
The right to remain silent, protects individuals from self-incrimination (cannot be forced to testify against yourself), prevents double jeopardy, property rights, etc.
6th amendment
the right to a speedy and public trial, an impartial jury, to be notified of the charges against them. (The right to a fair and just legal process for those accused). Related to criminal cases
7th amendment
Pertains to civil cases - if the amount in controversy exceeds $20, they have the right to a fair trial.
8th amendment
No cruel or unusual punishments
9th amendment
Protection of rights not enumerated in the Constitution
10th amendment
Any powers not expressly given to the federal government in the constitution are reserved for the states = Reserved Powers.
13th amendment
Ends slavery (1865)
14th Amendment
Citizenship rights and equal rights under the law. Equal protection clause. Supreme Court has ruled that this applies to the states. (1868)
15th Amendment
All males may vote regardless of race (1870)
16th Amendment
Allows the federal government to levy an income tax (without apportioning it among the states or basing it on the census) (1913)
17th Amendment
Direct election of senators (1913)
18th Amendment
Prohibition (1919) (repealed 1933)
19th amendment
(1920) Women granted the vote
24th Amendment
(1964) Prohibition on poll taxes
