What sources of evidence did the Romans leave behind?
Written sources such as Caesar, Pliny and Virgil, who wrote about the history of Rome. And physical remains of Roman life that can be seen all over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, such as many buildings and every day artefacts such as coins, weapons, tools and toys. The most important remains being the remains of the Roman town Pompeii, which was buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

How is Pompeii so well preserved?
The volcanic ash preserved the town just as it was, and archaeologists have been excavating it since 1748.
Roman Towns?
As their empire expanded into Europe, the Romans controlled each local area from the towns they founded. Romans lived here with the native people, many of whom became citizens.
What us a citizen?
A citizen are people who had rights under Roman law.
What features did most Roman towns share?
Walls for defence, paved streets layer out in a grid system, a forum, temples for worship, aqueducts to bring fresh water to the town, theatres for plays and performances, monuments or triumphal arches yo commemorate Rome’s history, public baths where people bathed, exercised and met friends, public toilet and drinking fountains, an amphitheatre.
What’s a forum?
A forum was a large town square, it was the centre of business, political activity and religious worship.
What is an amphitheatre?
An amphitheatre is where gladiatorial games were held.
