Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
Where does it occur?
A
-cytoplasm only
2
Q
Why do we need oxygen?
A
-final acceptor of H ions and e-
3
Q
What happens if no oxygen is available?
A
-no e- transport chain
-no krebs cycle
-no link reaction
4
Q
How does lactate fermentation work?
A
- pyruvate produced in glycolysis is reduced to from lactate
- by reducing NAD - 2H is added to pyruvate
- NAD is reused in glycolysis to ensure more ATP is being produced
- end result is lactate
5
Q
What then happens when lactate is formed?
A
- removed to liver in blood circulation
- large build up of it = reduces pH in muscle cells = fatigue
- when O2 is available - lactate converts back to pyruvate
6
Q
How does alcoholic fermentation work?
A
- pyruvate produced by glycolysis forms ethanal by pyruvate decarboxylase
- this releases CO2
- NAD is reduced - donate 2H to ethanal
- NAD is reused
- presence of 2H and ethanol dehydrogenase forms ethanol
