Superior
A body part is above another part, or closer to the head. (Above)
-thoracic cavity is superior to abdominopelvic cavity
Inferior
Means a body part is below another body part, or towards the feet. (Below)
-neck is inferior to the head
Anterior
Means towards the front.
-eyes are anterior to the brain
Posterior
Means towards the back.
-pharynx is posterior to oral cavity
Medial
Body part that is closer to an imaginary line than another body part.
-nose is medial to the eyes
Lateral
Means towards the side with respect to the imaginary midline.
-ears are lateral to the eyes
Proximal
Body part that is closer to a point of attachment then another body part.
-elbow is proximal to the wrist
Distal
Means that a particular body part is farther from the point of attachment then another body part.
-fingers are distal to the wrist
Superficial
Means situated near the surface.
-epidermis is superficial to the skin
Deep
Describes parts that are more internal.
-the dermis is the deep layer of skin
