Dorsal Body Cavity Function
protects nervous system
What is a body cavity?
a fluid-filled space within a multicellular organism that houses and protects internal organs
Subdivisions of Dorsal Cavity
Cranial Cavity (encases brain)
Vertebral Cavity (encases spinal cord)
Ventral Body Cavity
Organs contained within this body cavity include the lungs, heart,
stomach, intestines, and reproductive organs
Thoracic Cavity
surrounded the ribs and muscles of the chest
Divided into:
1. Pleural cavities - each houses a lung
2. Mediastinum - contains pericardial cavity and
surrounds thoracic organs
3. Pericardial cavity - encloses heart and
surrounds the esophagus, and trachea
Abdominopelvic Cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity subdivisions
1. Abdominal cavity - contains stomach,
intestines, spleen, and liver
2. Pelvic cavity - contains urinary bladder,
reproductive organs, and rectum
Ventral Body Cavities:
Serous membrane = ?
1. Parietal serosa = ?
2. Visceral serosa = ?
Serous membrane - lines the walls of
various body cavities and covers the surfaces of protruding organs
1. Parietal serosa lines internal body cavity walls
2. Visceral serosa covers internal organs (viscera)
