Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
(49 cards)
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a stable internal environment that allows the cells and tissues to normally function.
T of F: Men and women do not vary in terms of a “normal” physiological measurements.
False. Men and women do vary. Women also individually vary!
Positive feedback loops
Move the body farther away from homeostasis until a particular state is achieved. Ex: childbirth, blood clotting.
Negative feedback loops
Maintain the body at a “normal” level. Ex: body temperature.
Define: “The Nervous System”
The parts of the body that help you relay messages throughout the body by using electrical impulses.
What does the Nervous System include?
Brain, spine, nerves.
What is the functional unit of the nervous system?
The “nerve cell,” which communicates with chemical signals called “neurotransmitters.”
What are the 2 parts of the nervous system?
The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
What does the central nervous system include?
Brain and spine.
What does the peripheral nervous system include?
Sensory and motor nerves.
What do sensory nerves do?
Take information in.
What do motor nerves do?
Send information out.
What are the 2 subcategories of motor nerves?
Voluntary and automatic.
Define: voluntary motor muscle.
Conscious control of skeletal muscles.
Define: autonomic motor nerves.
Unconscious control of smooth muscle, organs, and glands. Includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
Define sympathetic
“Fight of flight”
Define parasympathetic
“Rest and digest”
Define: Endocrine System
Communicates with hormones between organ systems. Hormones interact with cells through specific receptors outside and inside the cell. Typically involve negative feedback loop mechanisms.
What does the endocrine system include?
Pituitary gland, hypothalamus, thymus, pancreas, ovary, testis.
Define: Integumentary System.
Provides a barrier from the outside world. It protects against thermal, chemical, and/or physical injury, is waterproof, sensory and is what gives you your outside appearance.
Define: Skeletal System
Your bones. It provides support, leverage, storage of minerals and fats, protection, and is the production sight for blood cells.
What do bones primarily consist of?
1/3 collagen, 2/3 hydroxyapatite minerals, and small amounts of cells called osteoblasts and osteocytes.
Osteoblasts
Build bone
Osteocytes
Maintain bone.
