Anatomy - Revision of PNS Flashcards
What do dendrites do?
Increase the SA of the cell body and communicate with neighbouring neurones
What is a ganglion?
A collection of nerve cell bodies located in the PNS
What is a nucleus?
A collection of nerve cell bodies located in the CNS
What is a Schwann cell?
Produces myelin in PNS
What are the 2 main types of neurones?
Multipolar Unipolar
Describe multipolar neurones.
2 or more dendrites Cell body in CNS, axon crosses from CNS into PNS
What neurones tend to be multipolar?
All motor neurones of skeletal muscle and autonomic nervous system
Describe unipolar neurones.
Double process Cell body in PNS
What neurones tend to be unipolar?
Sensory
What are efferent neurones?
Motor Impulse moves from CNS towards body wall, body cavity or organ
What are afferent neurones?
Sensory Impulse moves from periphery towards brain
What is a collection of axons surrounded by connective tissue and blood vessels called in the CNS?
A tract
What is a collection of axons surrounded by connective tissue and blood vessels called in the PNS?
A nerve
Where are spinal nerves found?
Only in the intervertebral foramina
What is anything before the spinal nerve called?
Root/rootlet
