Q

What’s the difference between the pulmonary circuit and systemic circuit?

A

Pulmonary is deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs (Dumps CO2 and picks up O2), while Systemic is oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body (Dumps O2 and picks up CO2).

Q

How can the flow of Oxygenated Blood be described?

A

Oxygenated blood flows to all body tissues via the aorta and and comes back to the heart via pulmonary veins.

Q

How can the flow of Deoxygenated Blood be described?

A

Deoxygenated blood pumps to the lungs via pulmonary arteries and returns to the heart via the venae cavae.

Q

What are the steps to the Cardiac Cycle?

A
  1. Atria contract (atrial systole)
  2. Ventricles contract (ventricle systole)
  3. Entire heart relaxes for a brief moment (cardiac diastole)

Q

What is the main function of the Sinoatrial Node (Pacemaker)?

A

To control the heart rate by using electric signals to cause the atria to contract.

15
Q

What are the main properties of arteries?

A

They are strong and elastic to withstand the high pressure blood. They also dilate or constrict due to smooth muscle contractions

16
Q

What is the main function of the veins?

A

To return blood to the heart.

17
Q

What are the main properties of the veins?

A

They are thinner and less muscular that arteries because they carry blood under low pressure. They have many valves to prevent backflow of blood.

18
Q

What is the main function of the capillaries?

A

To connect the arterioles to the venules.

19
Q

What are the main properties of the capillaries?

A

They are the smallest vessels, and are at the site of the the gas/fluid exchange.
