Where and when was Hippocrates born?
In Cos (Greece) at around 460 BC
What were his methods of work?
He observed and recorded the development of diseases, so they could find the right cure.
What were his main discoveries?
He discovered that people who were ill, there was usually liquid coming out of their bodies, for example phlegm or vomit. They decided that these liquids must be the causes of the diseases.
What did he publish?
Hippocrates published many collections called the Hippocrates Collection, containing books which doctors used for centuries.
What was the impact of his work?
Doctors continued to use his work for hundreds of years, and it affected the diagnosis of future patients.
When and where was Galen born?
Born in Greece (lived in the Roman Empire), born in 129 AD.
Where did he train?
Trained as a surgeon in a gladiator’s school
What were his main discoveries?
Proved the brain controlled speech and that arteries as well as veins carried blood
What did he publish?
He wrote 60 books, and they contained what he’d learned in Alexandra. People used them for 1500 years.
What was the impact of his work?
Galen built off of Hippocrates’ work, and said if you have a cold, apply heat. Do the opposite
Why did Hippocrates and Galen spark a huge change in thinking during ancient times?
They believed in natural remedies, not praying to God for help.
