What did Vesalius do?
Proved jaw is made up of one bone, and that invisible holes in heart don’t exist. Did this by dissection.
What did Vesalius’s work not do?
Did not benefit the sick, as there were no treatments in his books.
What did William Harvey do?
Proved the body had a one way system for blood circulation, veins carried blood and not air, and blood is pumped around body by heart.
What did William Harvey’s work not do?
No treatments, so no one was getting better
What did Alexander Flemming do?
Discovered penicillin by chance, and wrote an article, however no one thought it was important.
How did Florey and Chain help penicillin?
Asked for money to fund research from UK first, didn’t get enough, so asked America and got enough., but Needed a lot of penicillin, and even large drug companies couldn’t afford it, so they began to grow it themselves, but they ran out before they could test it properly.
How did war help penicillin?
When America was attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbour, America realised potential of penicillin for treating wounded soldiers, and began mass producing it, Britain following after. After the war, penicillin began to be manufactured and used by everyone.
What did Paul Ehrlich do?
Developed first chemical drug that killed bacteria inside the body, however it killed the patient too.
What did Gerald Domagk do?
Discovered Prontosil killed the bacteria causing blood poisoning. Then this cured diseases such as pneumonia and scarlet fever.
What did William Beveridge do?
Recommended that a National Health service be set up, free for everyone and paid for from taxes.
What did Bevan do?
Introduced the NHS in July 1948, due to William Beveridge’s report.
