Cognitive preparation, skill acquisition and application
What happens at the cognitive preparation stage?
Considers negative consequences, patterns of anger, thought patterns are challenged
What happens at the skill acquisition stage?
learn relaxation techniques, cognitive flexibility is encouraged, deal with conflict assertively
What happens at the application stage?
Role play scenarios, feedback from group and therapist
What did taylor and Novaco find?
75% improving rates (6 meta analysis)
What did Howells et al find?
Only moderate benefits (5 meta analysis), in 1 study only 1 showed improvements
What is a weakness of anger management?
-Based on self report data, Ireland used questionnaires, sample desirability bias.
-Limited effectiveness to reduce criminal behaviours, even though it can reduce anger
What are ethical implications?
-Offenders take part on a voluntary basis which increases effectiveness, compared to token economies which are being enforced in prisons
-However, may be imposed on as a sentence, not voluntarily so may not be willing to change
-Reduces responsibility, may blame on anger
What are social implications?
-Beneficial for reducing reoffending rate, reoffending costs economy 9.5B a year
-If effective long term benefits for prison staff and the public
