why was Alfred the great so popular?

A

Alfred the Great ruled from 871 - 899. Gained his popularity when he defeated the vikings at the battle of Edington 878 and signed a treaty with the Viking Guthrum. One of the clauses of the treaty was that the vikings were to be given the East of England this was called the Danelaw which consisited of the North west, North East and East of England. The areas under the Danelaw where people followed Danish law but in the rest of England they followed laws under the king.

who was Athelstan?

A

Athelstan was grandson of Alfred the great and given credit for defeating the Anglo Saxons and reclaiming the danelaw and defeating the vikings later on he even defeated the last viking Eric bloodaxe who controlled Northumbria. He was expelled from York for ruling with violence and barbarity.

A

Edward the confessor was king from1042 - 1066 and made laws, controlled protection the production of coins and decided when tax should be payed.

who were the Earls?

A

The most powerful lords that owned huge areas of land called earldoms. There were only 6 earls that would advise the king , raise men for the kings armies and enforce land. Earl comes from Danish word jarl meaning chieftain that ruled a region for the king.
