What is rabies caused by? How is it transmitted?
Caused by a virus found in warm-blooded animal. Transmitted by a bite or scratch. Non-bite exposure consists of contamination of wounds.
What are some signs that an animal may have rabies?
Made an unprovoked attack.
Acts strangely.
Is a high risk species.
How should one take care of an animal bite?
Bite that has broken the skin -
-Apply direct pressure over the wound.
-Wash w/soap and water
-Apply antibiotic ointment and a dressing
-Give pain medication
-Seek medical attention
Bite that has not broken the skin -
-Clean w/soap and water - holding under water for 5-10 minutes
-Dry the wound
-Apply antibiotic ointment
-Cover w/ sterile gauze or a clean cloth
-Give pain medication
-If condition worsens seek medical attention
What should you not do to an animal?
-Don’t capture the animal.
-Do not kill the animal

-Control bleeding w/direct pressure
-Wash the wound for 5-10 minutes w/soap/water
-Apply ice pack
-Apply an antibacterial ointment and a sterile dressing

Vipers have a triangular shaped head.

Vipers have elliptical/ vertical pupils.

A viper bite will typically leave two distinct puncture mark from its large, hinged fangs, appearing as two large holes.
A non-poisonous snake bite will show a row of smaller more evenly spaced teeth marks resembling a “U” shape.

Explain the difference of a illegitimate and a legitimate snake bite
Illegitimate -
- A person recognized the encounter w/ a snake
- Did not attempt to move away.
-Most often occurs on the upper extremities
- Most often occurs when the person tries to kill, capture, or play w/ the snake.
Legitimate -
- Bitten before the encounter w/ a snake was seen.
- Bitten while trying to move away.
- Most often involves the lower extremities.
- Are accidental.
List 3 signs and symptoms of a viper snake bite
- Severe burning pain
-Two small puncture wounds
-Swelling
-Discoloration
-Blood filled blisters
-Nausea
-Vomiting
-Sweating
-Weakness
List 3 signs and symptoms of a coral snake bite
Several hours may pass before the set of -
-Minimal pain
-Sagging or drooping under the eyelids
-Weakness
-Prickling feeling
-Tingling of skin
-Double vision
-Difficulty swallowing
-Sweating
-Abnormal flow of saliva
List 2 things you do and you don’t do for a coral snake bite
Do - Call 9-1-1, Stabilize the bitten arm or leg and Keep it below heart level(slows the spread of venom and minimizes impact on the body)
Do Not - Cut the skin or Use suction(as in sucking the poison out).
How do you take care of a non-venomous snake bite?
-Gently clean w/ soap/water
- Apply antibiotic ointment
- Bandage the bite
-Monitor the bite and keep the bite still
-Apply a compress
-Consult w/ a physician if bite worsens
