Definition of Poison
Anything that can cause harm to a person. By being used in the wrong way, by the wrong person, or in the wrong amount.
Define toxin
Poisonous substance produced by bacteria, animals or plants. Changes or destroys metabolism cells.
Types of Poisons
Ingested, Inhaled, Injected, Absorbed
Forms of poisons
Solids, Liquids, Gases, Sprays
Common poisons found in homes
Antifreeze, windshield washer, medicines(ex- Zanax), fuels and pesticides.
Percentage of all poisoning’s from ingesting is
80%
Signs and Symptoms of someone who ingested a poison
Abdominal pain, cramping, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizure, burns, odor, or stain around and in mouth
What should the 1st aider determine about a victim of poisoning
The persons age and weight, persons condition, what poison was swallowed, when the poison was taken, how much poison was taken

1st aid for someone who has been poisoned by INGESTION
Place the person on their left side, monitor breathing, if it stops - give CPR
What type of drug is alcohol
Depressant
Effects of alcohol on a person
Impaired judgement, Impaired vision, slow reaction time, poor coordination

Signs someone is drunk
Odor of alcohol on breath or clothing, unsteadiness, slurred speech, inability to carry on a conversation, feels nauseous, vomiting, flushed face and seizures
1st aid for a person who passed out due intoxication
- Check breathing and treat accordingly
- Call poison center(1-800-222-1222) or EMS for help
- Check for injuries
- Place the person in recovery position on their LEFT side
- If the person is violent, leave the scene
- Provide emotional support
- Assume that an injured or unresponsive person has a spinal injury
- Move person to a warm place

What do stimulants do to the person
Produce’s an excited state.

Disorganized behavior, hyperactivity, restlessness, anxiety or great fear, paranoia, delusions
What do you do for someone who overdoses on stimulants
- Check breathing

- Place person on recovery position on LEFT side
- Provide emotional support
- If violent, leave scene and seek safety

Produces changes in mood and sensory awareness
